Love at first sight
"The ugly young woman with the Asian features approached them. Her hands were in the pockets and she lifted the collar to shelter from wind. Wind... The wind changed its direction and blew directly to his face. There is something in her... Croydwasstaringather. Howcouldhethinkthatshewasugly? Perhaps, it was due to light. She was so beautiful that she took his breath away. He was yearning to see her smiling, to embrace and love her body. He was eager to play with her hair, kiss her and love. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen ", - it is the description of pheromones effect written in one of the stories of Roger Zelazny.
Actually the majority has either vague idea concerning pheromones or knows nothing at all. To explain the notion of pheromones it is necessary to refer to scientific article. "Pheromones - biological active substances secreted by organisms in minute amounts. They influence the behavior and development of others of the same species, often functioning as an attractant of the opposite sex. According to chemical structure, pheromones can be steroids, saturated or perchloric acids, alcohol oxides, pure alcohol or a mixture of these elements. They have small molecular weight and good fugitiveness. There are several kinds of pheromones. Sex pheromones (aphrodisiacs) are necessary to find, recognize and attract the species of the opposite sex and stimulate sexual behavior. Animals use other pheromones to mark territory, to gather the species of the same kind. Alarm pheromones are used in case of danger: they stimulate protective behavior in other species of the same kind".
In this article we will speak about sex pheromones. Their existence in people had long been argued. Some scientists, for instance, still think that in human, due to his anatomic features, the olfactory sex excitators play much less role than in animals, and they considerably give way to visual perception. Last years' experimental research data have shown that smells and pheromones are important means of sexual attraction and communication both in animals and in humans. It is already possible to draw a conclusion that it is pheromones that define sexual attraction between males and females. The majority of sex pheromones in humans are secreted near nasolabial folds and armpits. It doesn't mean that you should sniff each other as animals in order to find your second half. Pheromones are almost odorless but they influence, in very small quantities, the receptors of vomeronasal organ or the Jacobson organ (VNO).
The existence of the Jacobson organ in humans was for a long time unknown because it was thought that birds, crocodiles and narrow-nosed monkeys (the humans are referred to) didn't have this organ. The discovery of this organ in XVIII century by the Holland doctor was unnoticed and only in 1980s Moran D. and Jefeck B. from Denver University (USA, Colorado) thoroughly examined nasal cavity mucous membranes of hundreds of people and found VNO. It turned out that in each nostril we have a small pole 1 mm in diameter. From it there begins a pass 1 centimeter in length which leads to the VNO conic-shaped chamber.
The Jacobson organ is responsible, according to the Doctor of Biology A. Kamensky, for love at first sight, and to be more precise, at first smell. "However, pheromones are quickly destroyed in the air. Besides, they can't win through our clothes" - writes the scientist. It means that we can feel the smell only in summer and at short range. Generally speaking, the discovery of pheromones is a serious blow on the perfume industry. Using deodorants and any kind of perfume we lose the chance to "ferret out" our love.
However, artful perfumers having learned about pheromones, declared that their products contained these substances but of animal origin not human. In 1986 Winifred B. Kutler and her colleagues in one of the research centers in Philadelphia managed to extract pheromones from the human sweat. Kutler synthesized the synthetic analogue and began to produce and sell it under the title "Athena Pheromone 10:13".
However, Kutler's envious and less enterprising colleagues doubted that her product was able to enhance sexual life of every man and called it "romantic fantasy". Nevertheless, Kutler was fast with the comeback and answered that many woman felt that their sex appeal increased when they used her product. Nobody knows the truth but people believed Kutler and more than 14 thousand people ordered her product. As a result one more company declared that the perfume they produce contains human pheromones. These pheromones were synthesized by David Berliner, the Doctor of Medicine and Professor of Anatomy in the University of Utah. The scientist claims that the human pheromones "make people more attractive due to positive sensations of comfort, well-being and confidence, they create".
By the way, at proper time in the UK and other European countries aerosol sprays containing the male hormone androsterone grew into fashion. They had the name "Aelus-7" and exported in the USA with the name "Bodywise". It was supposed that they would attract and excite women unconsciously, making them treat men who used this perfume extremely sexual. Numerous experiments in England and the USA confirmed that this aerosol had sex appealing and aphrodisiac effects. For instance, the man, who without appearing to do so used "Bodywise", was more highly estimated by a woman. Moreover, when this aerosol was sprayed (only in experimental purposes) in telephone cabs and on the chairs of waiting room in Birmingham university, women stayed in cabs and sat on the chairs longer than usual.
Well, if all the above-written are true than, perhaps, there will be a day when the magic bottle with "love elixir" will be available to everyone. One can hardly imagine what will happen…It will be the time to put on a gas mask!
